Role Overview

To lead a dynamic, collaborative and inspiring Subcamp Team at EIJ 2028. You will be part of a unified team of ten Subcamp Leaders, who are all responsible for creating a welcoming home for the participants and leaders allocated to your respective Subcamp, whilst always striving to ensure that everyone has the best possible experience. Reports to the Head of Participant Experience. Responsible for the Subcamp Team and Participant Unit Leaders.

Responsibilities

• Before Jamboree (2026-2027):
  • Build a Team: Recruit and allocate specific roles within your team (21 members, including Deputy Subcamp Leader), including but not limited to Facilities and Safety, Programme, Help Desk, Communications, Contingent Support, Wellbeing and Safeguarding, Finance Lead, International Contingent Support, Visitor Day and Team Members.
  • Meetings: Attend regular bi-monthly meetings with the Head of Participant Experience and Subcamp Leaders, to share best practice and ideas. In addition to hosting your own regular Subcamp Team Meetings, to build a strong team ethos.
  • Plan and Prepare: Theming and programme for your Subcamp.
  • Liaison: Work closely:
    • with ‘Partner Subcamp’ to offer each other support and advice.
    • fellow Subcamp Leaders and Staff Subcamp Leader
    • with the Wellbeing and Inclusion Team within the Subcamp Directorate.
    • with teams in other Directorates, such as International, Communications and Facilities.
    • within the requirements specific to EIJ, such as Finance and Health & Safety Regulations.
• 2027-2028:
  • Meetings: Attend monthly (and ad-hoc) meetings with the Head of Participant Experience, including Essex Weekend 2028.
  • Communicate: Regularly update Unit Leaders through central communications, Subcamp specific Unit Leader’s Meetings and correspondence via your Subcamp EIJ email account, to keep them informed with important updates such as arrival and departure instructions.
  • Plan: Plan your subcamp layout, ensuring all participants have fair camping space along with central meeting locations and your Subcamp Hub.
  • Theming: Prepare the theming and programme for your Subcamp, considering the logistics of how these will be brought and removed from your Subcamp within the agreed budget.
  • Continued Liaison: with all Subcamps, Directorate Teams and EIJ specific policies.
• During Jamboree:
  • Keep Spirits High: With your team foster a fun, welcoming environment for all units on your Subcamp; greeting them on arrival and helping them settle into their camping space.
  • Problem Solving: Act as the primary point and troubleshooter for any issues that occur on your Subcamp.
  • Meetings: Attend daily meetings with the Head of Participant Experience and host daily Unit Leader Meeting on your Subcamp.
  • Liaison: Work closely with all Subcamps and Directors Teams throughout the event.
  • Ambassador: Throughout the event act as an Ambassador for EIJ’32, promoting the opportunities through the Jamboree.
• After Jamboree:
  • Meeting: Meet with the Head of Participant Experience and Subcamp Leaders for a debrief, to share best practice and ideas on how the event could be improved.
  • Ambassador: Continue to act as Ambassador of EIJ, promoting the next event in 2032.

Who we are looking for

An organised and analytical individual. Confident communicator who is comfortable liaising with different teams and communicating clearly with large and varied volunteer groups. Knowledge of, or a willingness to learn, to write documentation, such as risk assessments and subcamp policies. A positive, adaptable problem-solver with a cheerful disposition who thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic event environment is essential.
