Marshalling Team Leader

Area: Response
Role level: Team Leader

Role Overview

Lead a team of marshals at EIJ 2028, helping to deliver safe event management and a brilliant experience for Scouts and Guides from across the globe. This role will get you involved in many aspects of the Jamboree, working with many different teams. You will be responsible for a team of 20-30 marshals during a shift, made up of a mixture of core marshals and volunteers from other teams, to ensure a safe experience for everyone and respond to incidents where necessary. Training will be provided to make sure you feel ready for your role, but experience in event marshalling and team leadership is desired. Report directly to the Head of Marshalling. There are 3 positions available.

Responsibilities

  • Key responsibilities:
    • Managing your team across the event and ensuring team members know where to go and at what time, checking the welfare of the team (food, breaks, sun protection and mental wellbeing), and ensuring all team members understand their role and that any adjustments are in place for them to complete their role safely
    • Work a shift pattern between 7am and 11pm
    • Act as a point of escalation for your team, helping to resolve issues on your shift
    • Work with the Head of Marshalling and other Marshalling Team Leaders during points of escalation, either to escalate issues on your team or to respond to changing situations and mobilise your team
    • Support the safety of participants and staff across the event
    • Manage casual marshals who have volunteered from other teams during high-capacity moments, such as the ceremonies or arrivals and departures
  • Before the event:
    • Attend online meetings, and potentially face-to-face meetings in the Essex area, with the Head of Marshalling to ensure you have all the training you need
    • Complete any online or face-to-face training modules required, in addition to your normal Scouting, Guiding or work training
    • Communicate with your team and fellow Marshalling Team Leaders in the run-up to the event, escalating any issues or questions to the Head of Marshalling
  • During the event:
    • Work a varied shift pattern throughout the day, including shifts where you are working, on standby or on a break to enjoy the Jamboree
    • Communicate with the Head of Marshalling, your team and the other teams you are supporting
    • Camp in the staff area
    • Marshalling Team Leader will be your primary role, so you will not be able to take on other roles (such as Unit Leader) at the same event
