Welcome to the Jamboree!

Welcome to The River Reader and welcome to Essex International Jamboree 2024! It's been a long long road to get here, but here we are!

We'll be bringing you some of the best stories from around the jamboree every evening, exploring some of the great adventures taking place. But we've got more content available on our website - eij.org.uk.

Today's Wikipedia rabbit hole: Jamboree! The word Jamboree has been used in scouting and guiding since the first World Scout Jamboree in 1920. The word was chosen by Lord Baden Powell as he wished for Scouts to be greeted warmly with the phrase Jambo! In his own words: "People give different meanings for this word, but from this year on, jamboree will take a specific meaning. It will be associated to the largest gathering of youth that ever took place."

Thank you for joining us - either from a field or from the comfort of your own home - and we look forward to sharing this adventure with you!

Let the celebration begin!

From 7:00 pm the Subcamps began to make their way into the Main Arena to participate in tonight’s Opening Ceremony.

It's Arrivals Day at EIJ

It’s here! Arrivals Days at Essex International Jamboree 2024. Over 8,000 people have come together to celebrate Guiding and Scouting across the world.

With arrivals day in full swing, we spoke to a few groups from four of our Subcamps, who told us about their international and domestic travel experience, and what they are looking forward to in the coming week.
