Just kidding! Last night the Seine and Amazon Subcamps hosted their food festivals and we had the chance to try all their groups' chosen foods. Everyone was dressed up, trying new foods and dancing, they even had their own Ali G dancing the macarena and Cotton Eye Joe!
At the Seine festival we managed to distract some people from the food tables for a few moments. Hattie and Jackie from 1st Monks Risborough said “the most surprising food was cheese and onion crisp sandwich but the weirdest was the Danish whipped cream on liquorice”. Hattie and Jackie brought cherry fudge, but the twist is having to try the cockles first, which the group they are camping alongside brought with them from london! Jackie said “you can wash the cockles down with the sweet cherry fudge” and “if we were to do this again we would go even more adventurous or very simple”. Hattie said “the highlight was definitely the Maltese group, they brought 25Kg of food” they had Twisties (Nik Nak’s in England) and some sort of biscuits everything looked so good.
These festivals have been going on all week - on Monday it was Yangtze and Nile's turn. 14th Meath Scouts from Yangtze subcamp cooked up some Irish white pudding, which consists of pork meat, fat, spices and breadcrumbs on a traditional whole wheat bread. Sophie, a member of 14th Meath, said "We used a hurl to pass these out, which is a large wooden stick to hit a ball called a sliothar in the traditional Irish game of hurling." Sophie also had time to explore the various foods on offer, "I tried Egyptian dates, English gingerbread, dried fruit and mushy peas! These were all really nice."
These food festivals are such a great opportunity to try national and International Cuisines you may have never tried before, and are held every evening at 7PM. I’m sure we're all so excited to try the other subcamps' food!
