Necker Retreat

Welcome to Necker Retreat; the ultimate in package holidays!

Heroes and Heroines is a fitting topic for the Staff Subcamp, as without the heroic efforts of our committed staff there wouldn’t be a Jamboree taking place.

As Richard Branson’s private island paradise, Necker Island is the ultimate in luxury and exclusivity. Branson, the hugely successful self-made British entrepreneur, business magnate and philanthropist, bought the island as a luxury retreat for stars signed to Virgin records. In 1985 he started his own package holiday company; Virgin Holidays. ‘Necker’ also fits in nicely as a well-known term used by scouts around the world.

The Staff Hub is ‘The Horizon’. Horizon Holidays was the first company to introduce package holidays, so was an innovator of its time. As you can see our theme revolves heavily around the idea of holidays, but the idea is to give Staff their own Jamboree experience, a place to come and relax, and have their own time to enjoy themselves.

Necker Retreat Subcamp Team

Kate French

Subcamp Leader

I’m Kate and I am Head of Staff at EIJ2016.

This is my 4th Essex Jamboree. In 2004 and 2008 I was part of the team running It’s A Knockout sessions. In 2012 I was on the Staff Subcamp Team, pre event I looked after everything campsite but when I got to the event I moved over to help manage the front of house for staff catering. This was a great experience and gave me the appetite to want to do more!!!!!

In my Guiding life I am a Rainbow, Brownie and Ranger leader. I love each section for totally different reasons, the Rainbows are amazed by anything you put in front of them, the Brownies have great personalities and make me laugh every week and the Rangers are a huge bundle of energy and keep us on our toes as we never know what activities they are going to enjoy!

In my Scouting life I am a member of Essex Network Active Support, I have been involved with Essex Network for 10 years and was a member of Synergy Southend before taking on a county role looking after marketing and promotion.

I’m looking forward to the challengers ahead and meeting so many new faces at EIJ2016!

Clair Willis

Subcamp Media Manager

My name is Clair Willis but you can often hear me referred to as just Willis, or maybe Captain!

I joined Scouts in 2000 and attended my first Essex International Jamboree the same year; that week cemented my love of Scouting and created so many great memories. I moved on to Ventures and then Network when the age ranges changed, and I still have so many friends who continue their involvement with Scouting and the EIJ.

I was on the Media Team at the World Jamboree in 2007 and through Network always had some involvement with newsletters or social media. As Staff Subcamp Media Manager I’m looking forward to meeting lots of new people, making sure everyone knows what’s going on, and shining a spotlight on the staff who make this epic event happen!

Karl Levene

Staff Campsite Manager

Hi, my name is Karl and I will be your Staff Campsite Concierge (aka fun police, aka Campsite Manager) for this year’s EIJ. I have had previous experience at this event as a member of the Amazon Staff Hub in 2012 and I took my explorer unit in 2008, both have left lasting memories.

My jamboree experience is not just limited to Essex, believe it or not, there are numerous other events outside our county. Most recently I took a group of explorers last year to Japan as part of the World Scout Jamboree. In 2011 I was a member of the Contingent Support Team in Sweden. I also have extensive experience in taking groups to Kandersteg in Switzerland.

My normal Scouting job is as a District Commissioner in North East London. On top of that, I’m am also a DoE Assessor and Adviser as well as the Manager for the National Scout Climbing team.

I am really looking forward to this year’s event, not only is it a chance to meet up with some great Scouting friends, but also a great opportunity to make new ones. So feel free in saying hi, you won’t be able to miss me, I’ll be the one telling you to keep the noise down after lights out. One further thing to remember about me, I like gossip, tea and cake and I’m also very easily bribed.

Lesley Jenkins

Tourist Information

Hi there, my name is Lesley Jenkins and I will be working in Tourist Information, with a small team of eager Tour Guides.

Although I am a slightly older in actual years I am extremely young at heart. I am a Guide leader in Hadleigh, Essex as well as Show Manager for the Southend Scout & Guide Gang Show. I cleaned toilets at 3 EIJs, my eldest daughter celebrating her 1st birthday at the 1996 Jamboree. I have taken the Guides to the 2 previous EIJs, my daughter celebrating her 13th birthday at the 2008 Jamboree. This year I fancied working with the rest of the staff, hence my move into Necker’s Retreat. Sensing a theme here, as a proud mum, my daughter will this year celebrate her 21st birthday at the Jamboree.

I would like to think I am very approachable so please do not hesitate to find me!
